REPORTING TRIP

Malawi

The W.H. Gates Sr. Institute and the Family Planning News Network (FPNN) will be taking a group of journalists and content creators to Malawi to report on the transformative power of family planning and reproductive health.

The trip will introduce participants to powerful stories, influential people, and new ways of looking at key research and data. We will be visiting local communities, joining leaders at the African Population Conference and learning from regional and global experts.

Trip Highlights

Interviews & Networking: Meet experts, fellow journalists, and community leaders to help you take a deeper dive into the stories about the power of reproductive health investments. Interviews can be set up based on interests.

FP/SRHR Story Generation: Attend key briefings on new data, learn about regional SRHR policies, and learn about innovation solutions for the generation of longer form, high-level stories.

Community/Partner Spotlights: Visit programs and develop content that showcases innovation, learnings, and successes within the FP/SRHR communities.

    We are looking for individuals that are interested in using their networks (professional, social, personal) to highlight and link to the power of family planning and reproductive health.

    The main goal of this reporting trip is to provide a targeted and intimate opportunity to develop meaningful news and content that supports the transformative power of access to SRHR.

  • The trip be split into three main parts. Each part is crafted to provide access to the participating journalist with the needed elements to craft a story.

    Part 1 - Background and Scene setting

    • Reporting trip kick-off briefing

    • Attendance of the 9th African Population Conference with a media briefing and interview support

    • Networking with other journalist and content creators

    Part 2 - Story gathering: Community & Programmatic

    • Personal storytelling sessions

    • Conversation with community groups

    • 1-1 interviews with advocates

    • Showcase of community successes

    Part 3 - Synthesis

    • Debriefing and planning for next steps

    This itinerary is subject to change.

  • There will be a team of reviewers from John’s Hopkins University and the W.H. Gates Sr. Institute that will choose the participants.

    The reveiwers will judge applications based on the quality of the answers and the perception of the fit. We will also try to ensure that there is a balance of ‘types’ of journalist on the trip.

  • If you are selected to join us on the FPNN Reporting trip to Malawi, you are receiving a fixed travel award, including media registration for APC, travel, and accommodation costs. The travel award is covering the cost of ground transportation and hotel (room & tax), and per diem from Wednesday, 22 May through Sunday, 26 May 2024. (5 nights)

     

    Hotel will be paid directly by the Gates Institute finance team. Other hotel arrangements will not be reimbursed. Awardees will be responsible for their own accommodations if arriving earlier or staying later than these dates.
